Description Fagus sylvatica – Green Beech or European Beech DESCRIPTION: A stately tree grown for form and foliage. They are surface-rooting trees. Very long lived, they will take 30 years to reach their mature height. HEIGHT: 20.0m WIDTH: 10.0m *height & width at maturity FORM: Broad and rounded with branches down to the ground FOLIAGE: Shiny green toothed leaves become a brilliant, reddish brown in autumn. Brown leaves remain on the tree throughout winter until new shoots push them away. FLOWERS and FRUIT: Small flower clusters of drooping yellow balls in spring BARK: Smooth-barked silver-grey trunks, GROWTH RATE: Moderate LANDSCAPE USES: Can be kept trimmed to a hedge with ease. TOLERANCES: They grow best in deep, fertile, moist, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Good frost and wind tolerance. Does not tolerate waterlogged sites. TREE CARE: Trim lightly to allow the natural shape to develop. Mulch well to maintain moisture, water well in summer, annual feed of balanced, slow release fertiliser in spring.Can be susceptible to aphids and powdery mildew.
